Since WhatsApp was bought by Facebook in 2014, known now as Meta, the messaging app has grown and become more and more popular worldwide where people can communicate with family and business internationally and for free. Meta are now looking to continue to develop the platform and add different features.
Huge Popularity
Over the course of 2023, it is clear that WhatsApp is one of the most popular apps for users in the world. In fact, during the course of the last year it was the most popular messaging app in the world and the third most popular of all social media platforms. The statistics show that WhatsApp has 2,7 billion active users per month which represents over 52% of internet users globally.
One of the reasons why the app is so popular is because it is free to use since the removal of its subscription model in 2016 and, for the moment, there is no advertisement on the app. People can communicate with family members and friends across the world, as well as using the app to communicate with businesses in a very simple manner.
New Features Added
As WhatsApp is becoming as popular as platforms like Instagram, X and LinkedIn, Meta is interested in adding features to the app to continue to develop it and take it beyond its nature of being just a messaging app. To do that, WhatsApp has added the possibility for admins to create polls in their channels to enable them to interact with their online community. On those channels, it’s possible for admins to engage directly with users by using voice notes. It will be possible as well for people to share public channels and grow communities.
Recently, new features had been added as well to emphasise on privacy, protection of publication of images and safeguard conversation with the possibility of having « locked chats » protected by a password. All these features also attract businesses to use the platform to communicate with clients and other businesses and send documents with protection and privacy given by the platform.
