Launched last summer in the United States of America and 100 other countries, followed by a launch in EU countries in December 2023, Threads is trying to rival and compete with X, formerly known as Twitter, after the arrival and changes brought about by Elon Musk on the platform. Let’s have a look at this online rivalry.
The Differences
Last year, a lot was said about the impact of the changes made by Elon Musk on his newly purchased platform and how users left when it was rebranded X and the direction taken under the new ownership. Instagram boss, Adam Mosseri, then decided to launch Threads when he saw an opportunity to bring a more balanced approach to discussions on social media.
The platform was launched with the goal of hosting more thoughtful interactions, Threads wants to differentiate itself by focusing on longer-form content and threading conversations. Threads allows a bigger number of characters than on X, unless you get a premium account which gives X users more freedom. Threads are using the connection with Instagram to amass users and link to people’s accounts.
However, X still has the legacy and remains the go to platform for for breaking news, updates and live feeds. It has kept the retweets and likes culture for interaction and discussion on live subjects along with hashtags which helps users to discuss the trend of the day. On that level, X is more designed for quick interactions, whereas Threads is looking for more deeper conversations about topics, current or not.
Threads trying to get the edge on X
Since its launch, Threads is always trying to rival X and has recently added a new feature which aims to get into the territory of what X does best. From now on, if you search for a sports team-related tag on Threads, you’ll be shown a new panel with real-time scores from their latest match. Sports is one the most popular subjects on X and that is something Threads is now looking to get into and for X users to come across to their platform.
However Threads still has a lot of work to do because on X, you can see real-time results, and it remains the primary destination for the latest news and discussions around sport topics. Also, big sport personalities have established accounts on X with a lot of following and will not just move their accounts to Threads. Therefore, there is still a lot of work to do on this for Threads at a time where X hasn’t added any new daily active users in over a year.
